What Is Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Vinyl plank flooring, often called LVP flooring (luxury vinyl plank), is a multi-layer synthetic plank made to look like hardwood. Each plank has a printed image layer under a clear wear layer, sitting on top of a rigid or flexible core.

People choose LVP flooring because it is:

  • Waterproof or highly water resistant on the surface, so it works in kitchens, bathrooms and basements
  • Much cheaper than hardwood or tile, usually $2 to $5 per square foot for materials
  • Installable over most existing floors, which means no demolition in many rooms
  • Beginner friendly, since most types click together with no glue or nails
  • Easy to clean, with no grout lines and no refinishing

Types of Vinyl Plank Flooring

Your install method depends entirely on which type you buy. There are four.

1. Click-lock vinyl planks. The planks snap together with a tongue-and-groove edge and float over the subfloor. Nothing is glued or nailed down. This is the most popular type for DIY and the one this guide focuses on.

2. Glue-down vinyl planks. You spread adhesive on the subfloor with a notched trowel and press the planks into it. This is common in commercial spaces, rentals and rooms with rolling loads. It holds up well but demands a near-perfect subfloor.

3. Peel-and-stick (and GripStrip) vinyl planks. Peel-and-stick planks have adhesive on the back that bonds to the subfloor. GripStrip planks have adhesive strips that bond to each other instead, creating a floating floor.

4. Loose lay vinyl planks. These are heavy planks with a grippy backing that stay put by weight and friction. They are simple to remove, which makes them useful for rentals.

Tools and Materials Needed

How Long Does It Take to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Most beginners install 150 to 250 square feet per day. Plan your time like this:

Where Can You Install Vinyl Plank Flooring?

Vinyl plank works in almost every room in the house, including places hardwood cannot go.

Good places to install LVP:

  • Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, since the surface is waterproof
  • Basements, including below-grade concrete slabs
  • Living rooms, bedrooms and hallways
  • Over concrete, plywood, OSB, ceramic tile and a single layer of existing vinyl
  • Over radiant heat, if the manufacturer approves it and you stay under the temperature limit

Places to avoid:

  • Outdoors, sunrooms and enclosed porches. Direct sunlight and big temperature swings make planks expand, contract and buckle.
  • Over carpet or carpet padding. The floor will flex and joints will fail.
  • Over a floating floor, like existing laminate. Two floating layers move against each other.
  • Over a damp or untested concrete slab. Trapped moisture causes mold and adhesive failure.
  • Over cushioned or perimeter-glued sheet vinyl. It is too soft to support the planks.
  • Saunas or rooms above 85°F.

One more rule: install vinyl plank under cabinets only if it is a glue-down floor. A floating floor pinned down by heavy cabinets cannot move, and it will buckle. Install cabinets first, then float the floor up to them.

How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring: Step-by-Step

Read your manufacturer’s instructions before you start. Every brand has its own numbers for expansion gaps, stagger distance and subfloor flatness, and following theirs is what keeps the warranty valid.

Step 1: Measure the Room and Calculate Flooring Quantity

Measure the length and width of the room in feet, then multiply them. For rooms that are not simple rectangles, split the space into rectangles, measure each one, and add the totals together.

Formula: Length × Width = Square Feet. Then add your waste factor.

  • Add 10% for a simple, square room with straight walls
  • Add 15% for rooms with closets, bump-outs or angled walls
  • Add 20% for diagonal, herringbone or chevron layouts

Example: a 12 ft × 15 ft bedroom is 180 sq ft. Add 10% and you need 198 sq ft, so buy 200 sq ft.

Buy all of it at once and check that every box has the same lot or batch number. Colors shift slightly between production runs, and you cannot always match them later. Keep one or two leftover boxes for future repairs.

Step 2: Acclimate the Vinyl Planks

Bring the unopened boxes into the room where they will be installed and leave them there for at least 48 hours. Some brands ask for 24 hours, others for 72. Check the box.

Rules for acclimation:

  • Stack boxes flat, never on their sides or on edge
  • Keep them off exterior walls and away from vents
  • Keep the room between 65°F and 85°F during acclimation and installation
  • Keep heating or cooling running, not switched off

Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of gaps that show up weeks later. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, and planks installed cold will shrink once the room warms up.

Step 3: Remove Old Flooring, Baseboards and Fasteners

Pull up carpet, padding, tack strips and staples. You can leave ceramic tile or a single layer of well-bonded vinyl in place if it is flat and firmly stuck down.

Then decide about baseboards. You have two options:

  1. Remove them and reinstall after. More work, much cleaner look. Score the caulk line with a utility knife first, then use a trim puller so the boards come off intact.
  2. Leave them on and add quarter round. Faster, but you will see a molding strip along every wall.

Now run a flat pry bar or scraper across the whole subfloor. If it catches on anything, fix it. Hammer raised nails flush, drive screws down or back them out completely, and scrape off old adhesive ridges. Anything sticking up will telegraph through the plank and show as a bump.

Step 4: Prepare, Clean and Level the Subfloor

This step decides whether your floor feels solid or cheap. Most floating floors fail here, not during installation.

The flatness standard: most manufacturers require the subfloor to be flat within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span, or 1/8 inch over 6 feet. Check your box, because the number varies by core type.

How to check and fix it:

  1. Lay a 6-foot level or a straight board across the floor in several directions
  2. Mark every dip and hump you find with a pencil
  3. Fill low spots with floor patch on wood subfloors, or self-leveling compound on concrete
  4. Grind or sand down high spots on concrete or plywood
  5. Screw down any loose or squeaky subfloor panels into the joists
  6. Vacuum the entire floor until it is completely clean

Note that “level” is not quite the right word. A floor can slope gently and still be fine. What matters is that it is flat, with no sudden dips or bumps over short distances.

Warning: never sand old vinyl flooring or old adhesive. Flooring installed before 1990 can contain asbestos. If the old vinyl is not flat, remove it carefully or cover it with underlayment panels instead.

Step 5: Check for Moisture

Vinyl planks are waterproof, but your subfloor is not. Moisture rising through concrete gets trapped under the floor and causes mold, cupping and adhesive failure.

Test concrete slabs before you install, even if they look dry.

  • New concrete must cure for at least 60 days before you install anything over it
  • Plastic sheet test (free): tape a 2 ft × 2 ft square of plastic sheeting tightly to the slab. After 72 hours, check for condensation or a dark patch. Either one means moisture is coming through.
  • Calcium chloride test (ASTM F1869): the reading should be no more than 3 pounds per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours for most products
  • In-situ relative humidity test (ASTM F2170): most manufacturers want 75% to 80% RH or lower

For wood subfloors, use a moisture meter. Most brands want the wood below 12% moisture content, and no more than a 4% difference between the subfloor and the planks.

If a slab tests wet, fix the source first. A 6-mil vapor barrier or a moisture-blocking underlayment helps, but it does not solve a real water problem.

Step 6: Decide on Underlayment

Does vinyl plank flooring need underlayment? Usually no. Most modern LVP already has a foam or cork pad attached to the back. Adding a second layer under it makes the floor too soft, stresses the locking joints, and often voids the warranty.

Use this rule:

Never use thick carpet padding or standard laminate foam under vinyl plank. Vinyl needs a firm base. Soft padding lets the planks flex and the click joints break apart over time.

Step 7: Plan Your Starting Point and Layout

Ten minutes of planning here saves hours of frustration later.

Pick a direction. Running planks parallel to the longest wall, or toward the main light source, usually looks best. In a narrow hallway, run them along the length. There is no structural rule for floating vinyl the way there is for hardwood, so this is mostly a design choice.

Pick a starting wall. Start along the longest, straightest wall, ideally the one nearest the main doorway. Alignment errors get pushed to the far side of the room where they are less noticeable.

Calculate the last row width. This is the step almost every beginner skips.

  1. Measure the room’s width in inches
  2. Subtract 1/2 inch for expansion gaps on both sides
  3. Divide by the plank width
  4. Look at the remainder

If the last row would be narrower than one-third of a plank width (or under 2 inches), rip the first row narrower to balance both sides. A room that ends in a 1-inch sliver looks like a mistake, and thin strips are also hard to lock in and easy to break.

Calculate the end pieces the same way. Measure the row length, divide by plank length, and check the remainder. If the last plank in a row would be shorter than 6 to 8 inches, cut the first plank in that row shorter to move the extra length to the end.

Plan for doorways. Never try to slide a single full-width plank under a doorway on both sides of the jamb. It cannot be done once the row is locked. Plan a seam in the middle of the doorway instead.

Shuffle your planks. Open several boxes and sort planks into piles by pattern. Most brands print six to eight repeating patterns. Rotate through the piles as you install so identical planks never sit next to each other, or beside one another in adjoining rows. This one habit is the difference between a floor that looks real and one that looks printed.

Step 8: Undercut Door Jambs and Trim

Flooring should slide under door casings and jambs, not be cut around them. Scribing planks around trim leaves visible gaps you have to caulk, and it always looks like a shortcut.

  1. Lay a scrap plank flat on the floor next to the jamb, with the underlayment under it if you are using any
  2. Rest an oscillating multi-tool or a flush-cut handsaw flat on top of the scrap
  3. Cut through the jamb and casing at that exact height
  4. Clear the debris and test the fit with the same scrap

If you are installing a transition strip in that doorway, set the strip’s metal channel first so you know how much to undercut.

Step 9: Lay the First Row and Set the Expansion Gap

The first row controls everything. If it is crooked, every row after it will be crooked too.

  1. Snap a chalk line 1/4 inch out from the starting wall, or use a laser level. Do not trust the wall itself, since walls are rarely straight.
  2. Place spacers against the wall every 2 to 3 feet to hold the expansion gap.
  3. Trim the tongue off the long edge of the first row’s planks so the cut edge faces the wall.
  4. Lay the first plank in the corner with its cut edge to the wall.
  5. Add the next plank by holding it at a slight angle, inserting the short end tongue into the groove, and lowering it flat until it clicks.
  6. Continue to the end of the row, then measure and cut the final plank, leaving a 1/4-inch gap at that wall too.
  7. Check the row against your chalk line before you go any further.

What is an expansion gap? It is the empty space between the wooden flooring and every fixed object, so the floor can expand and contract with temperature. A floating floor that touches the wall has nowhere to go and will lift in the middle.

Leave a 1/4-inch gap minimum (some brands want 3/8 inch) at:

  • Every wall
  • Door jambs and thresholds
  • Cabinets, islands and built-ins
  • Fireplace hearths and stair nosings
  • Pipes and floor vents
  • Any run longer than 30 feet, where you need an expansion joint in the middle

Baseboards and quarter round cover these gaps at the end.

Step 10: Stagger the Plank Joints

Stagger means the end joints in each row are offset from the joints in the rows beside it. It is both a structural and a visual requirement.

The rules:

  • Offset end joints by at least 6 inches between adjacent rows. Many rigid core products require 8 or even 12 inches, so check the box.
  • Never let end joints line up in every other row. That creates an “H-joint” pattern the eye picks up immediately.
  • Never end a row with a piece shorter than 6 inches.
  • Vary your offsets. Cutting every row to the same 12-inch step creates an obvious diagonal staircase across the floor.

The easy method: use the offcut from the end of one row to start the next row, as long as it is longer than 6 or 8 inches. This gives you a natural random pattern and cuts your waste dramatically.

Step 11: Cut the Planks

You have several options, and none of them need to be expensive.

  • Score and snap. Run a utility knife along a straightedge on the face of the plank two or three times, then bend the plank upward until it snaps. Fast, quiet, no dust. Best for straight cuts on thinner planks.
  • Vinyl guillotine cutter. One clean chop, no dust, and you can use it while kneeling on the floor. The fastest option for rigid core planks.
  • Miter saw with a fine-tooth blade. Cleanest straight cuts, but it makes dust and means standing up for every cut.
  • Jigsaw. Best for curves, notches and vent cutouts. Use a fine-tooth blade and cut with the plank face up.
  • Oscillating multi-tool. Best for cutouts in the middle of a plank and for undercutting jambs.
  • Handsaw. Works fine. Do not let a lack of power tools stop you.

Tip for measuring end cuts: instead of pulling out a tape measure, flip the plank end for end, slide it against the spacer at the wall, and mark where it overlaps the last installed plank. Then cut on the mark. Just remember to flip it back before cutting, or you will trim the wrong end.

Step 12: Click the Planks Together Properly

Every locking system is slightly different, but the general method is the same.

  1. Hold the new plank at a 20 to 30 degree angle
  2. Insert the tongue of the short end into the groove of the plank next to it
  3. Lower the plank flat, then push the long side into the previous row’s groove
  4. Lower it until the joint drops in and clicks
  5. Tap along the seam with a tapping block and mallet to fully seat it

Do not force joints. If a plank will not click, something is in the way. Check for a chip of plank in the groove, dust, a bit of dried patch compound, or a small piece of debris. Lift the plank, clean the groove and try again. Forcing it cracks the locking edge, and a cracked edge will separate later.

Never hit the plank edge directly with a hammer. Always use a tapping block or a scrap piece of the same flooring.

Step 13: Work Around Corners, Obstacles and Odd Shapes

Bump-outs and inside corners. Plan ahead. If a corner falls where a plank is too short to span it, unlock a few rows, put a shorter plank at the start of that row, and shift the rest down. Then notch a full-length plank around the corner instead of tying in a small floating piece.

Floor vents. Never let a vent cutout land on or near a short end joint. It weakens the lock. Adjust the row so the vent sits at least 8 inches from any end seam, then trace the vent, drill a starter hole and cut it out with a jigsaw or multi-tool.

Toilets. Either pull the toilet and run the flooring underneath (the better result), or cut around the base and caulk the gap. Running flooring underneath means you do not have to re-cut if you replace the toilet later.

Pipes and radiator feet. Drill a hole 1/2 inch larger than the pipe, then cut a wedge from the plank edge to the hole. Slide the plank in, glue the wedge back in place, and cover the gap with a pipe collar.

Irregular shapes like stone hearths. Trace the shape onto a sheet of cardboard or paper first, cut the template, test the fit, adjust it, then transfer it to the plank. A contour gauge works for smaller profiles. Making a paper template first means you only ruin cardboard, not planks.

Step 14: Install the Last Row

The last row is the hardest, because you cannot swing a mallet against the wall.

  1. Measure the gap between the wall and the last installed row at several points, since walls are never perfectly parallel
  2. Subtract 1/4 inch for the expansion gap
  3. Rip the plank lengthwise to that width, cutting on a slight angle if the wall is not straight
  4. Click the plank in and use a pull bar at the wall end to pull the joint closed
  5. Tap the pull bar gently, since hitting it hard will chip the plank edge

If the last row would be narrower than 2 inches, go back to Step 7. You should have adjusted the first row.

Step 15: Install Transition Strips, Trim and Finishing

Almost done. This is what makes the job look professional.

  1. Remove all spacers around the room
  2. Install transition strips in every doorway. Use a T-molding between two floors of the same height, a reducer where the vinyl meets a lower floor, and a stair nose at any step down. Screw the channel to the subfloor, never through the vinyl.
  3. Reinstall baseboards. Nail them into the wall studs only, never down into the floor. A baseboard nailed into the flooring pins the floating floor in place and causes buckling.
  4. Add quarter round or shoe molding if you left the baseboards on. Same rule: nail into the baseboard, not the floor.
  5. Caulk in wet areas. Run a bead of silicone along the toilet base, tub edge and shower base to keep water out from under the floor.
  6. Vacuum, then damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner.
  7. Add furniture pads to every chair and table leg before you move furniture back in.

You can walk on the floor immediately. Wait 24 hours before moving heavy furniture back, and slide appliances in on a sheet of hardboard so you don’t gouge the wear layer.

15 Common Vinyl Plank Flooring Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Most failed installs come down to the same handful of errors. Here they are, in the order they usually happen.

1. Skipping Subfloor Preparation

This is the single biggest cause of failure. A rushed subfloor gives you gaps, clicking noises and separated joints within months.

Avoid it: budget as much time for prep as for laying planks. Vacuum, check flatness, fix dips and humps, sink fasteners, and clean again.

2. Installing Over an Uneven Subfloor

A floating floor needs even support across the whole room. Where there is a dip, the planks bridge it. Every step flexes the joint at that spot until the lock wears out and opens.

Avoid it: check with a 6-foot level in several directions and fix anything outside 3/16 inch over 10 feet.

3. Not Leaving Expansion Gaps

Vinyl expands when it warms. With no gap, the floor pushes against the walls and lifts in the middle. This shows up as a ridge or “peaking” down the room, often weeks after installation when the weather changes.

Avoid it: use spacers at every wall and every fixed object. Do not skip closet interiors or the space behind the door.

4. Ignoring Moisture Issues

Vinyl is waterproof, so people assume moisture doesn’t matter. It matters underneath. Vapor rising from a slab gets trapped and grows mold you cannot see until the smell appears.

Avoid it: run a moisture test on every concrete slab and use a vapor barrier below grade.

5. Poor Layout Planning

Ending a room with a 1-inch strip, or a row with a 2-inch stub, looks amateurish and creates weak spots.

Avoid it: do the last-row and last-plank math from Step 7 before you lay anything.

6. Failing to Stagger Seams Properly

Joints that line up, or step across the room in a regular diagonal, are the first thing a visitor’s eye lands on. Aligned joints are also structurally weaker.

Avoid it: offset at least 6 inches, vary the offsets, and use offcuts to start new rows.

7. Not Shuffling Plank Patterns

Manufacturers repeat six to eight patterns per box. Install straight from the box and you will get identical planks side by side.

Avoid it: open several boxes, sort into piles, and rotate as you go.

8. Forcing Click-Lock Joints

If a joint won’t close, hitting it harder will not fix it. It will crack the locking edge. Cracked locks separate months later, and you cannot see the damage once the plank is down.

Avoid it: stop, lift the plank, check the groove for debris, and re-seat it.

9. Using the Wrong Underlayment

Adding foam under a plank that already has a pad is the most common warranty-voiding mistake in the whole job. Thick carpet padding under vinyl is worse.

Avoid it: check whether your plank has an attached pad. If it does, use nothing.

10. Installing Damaged Planks

Chipped edges and factory defects are easy to miss when you’re moving fast. A plank with a damaged tongue will not lock properly, and the seam will open.

Avoid it: inspect each plank before installing it. Set aside damaged ones for cut pieces where the damaged edge gets trimmed off. Check color and finish under room lighting.

11. Cutting Planks Incorrectly

Cutting the wrong end of a plank wastes it. Measuring from the wall instead of from the last plank compounds errors down the row.

Avoid it: always mark from the installed plank, not from a tape measure reading. Cut with the finished face up when using a jigsaw, and face down on a miter saw, to keep chips off the visible side.

12. Installing Over Unsuitable Surfaces

Carpet, cushioned sheet vinyl, another floating floor, or a damp slab will all cause failure no matter how carefully you lay the planks.

Avoid it: the subfloor must be rigid, flat, dry and firmly attached. If it moves, it isn’t ready.

13. Leaving Baseboards On Without Planning for It

You can leave baseboards on, but you need thick quarter round to cover both the expansion gap and the height difference from the old floor. If you plan for thin shoe molding, you will run out of coverage.

Avoid it: decide before you start, and buy molding wide enough to cover the gap you actually leave.

14. Nailing Baseboards Into the Floor

This pins a floating floor in place. The floor cannot move, so it buckles. It’s an easy mistake because the nail gun is already pointing down.

Avoid it: angle nails into the wall studs, not through the flooring.

15. Not Following Manufacturer Instructions

Every number in this guide has an exception somewhere. Expansion gaps, stagger distances, flatness limits, acclimation times and underlayment rules all vary by product. Ignoring the box is the fastest way to lose your warranty.

Avoid it: read the instruction sheet inside the first box before you open the rest.

Troubleshooting: Fixing Problems After Installation

Gaps Between Planks

Causes: planks not fully clicked, subfloor dips, skipped acclimation, or heavy furniture dragging a row apart.

Fix: for small gaps, tap the seam closed with a tapping block from the nearest wall. For gaps that keep coming back, you have a subfloor or acclimation problem, and the affected area needs to come up.

Lifting, Shifting or Buckling Planks

Causes: no expansion gap, baseboards nailed into the floor, heavy cabinets pinning the floor, or moisture.

Fix: pull the baseboard along the buckled wall and check the gap. If the floor is touching the wall, trim the plank edge back to restore a 1/4-inch gap. The buckle usually settles within a few days once the floor can move.

Squeaking or Soft Spots
